MALA MALA GAME RESERVE
Mala Mala Game Reserve is the largest tract of privately owned big game territory in South Africa and boasts a multitude of animals including lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino (black and white), leopard, cheetah, wild dog, together with a wealth of antelopes, birds and reptiles interacting in their natural environment.
We are delighted to advise that MalaMala has been honoured as one of the Top Ten hotels worldwide on Fodor’s Choice 2006 list. We are proudly representing Africa as the only African destination selected.
MalaMala Game Reserve is situated in the eastern part of South Africa in the province of Mpumalanga. It shares a common border of 19km / 12 miles with the Kruger National Park and is part of a conservation gene pool that covers 5.5 million acres of land in the heart of the South African Lowveld.
Safaris in open landrovers are conducted over the vast tract of bushveld, with after dark spotlight safaris providing the opportunity to view the nocturnal creatures and carnivores "on the hunt" - a truly exhilarating experience. All vehicles are linked by radio communication but to add to the relaxation of your safari each ranger is equipped with an independent headphone. Walking safaris may be arranged depending on the inclination of the guests.
Mala Mala Main Camp is set in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the Sand River. The ochre buildings with their thatched roofs, set among manicured lawns, blend harmoniously with the large shady trees. An expansive wooden deck provides an elevated view of animals watering in the Sand River.
Breakfast and lunch are served in an attractive air-conditioned dining room overlooking the Sand River. Dinner, announced by the beating of African drums, is served under the stars in a reed enclosed boma, a tradition laid down at Campbell's first camp. Sitting around a log fire, enjoying MalaMala's venison specialities and haute bush cuisine while sampling an outstanding South African wine, is yet another highlight of the MalaMala experience
The Sable Suite is situated at the southern end of the MalaMala Camp in a prime elevated position overlooking the Sand River and surrounding bush. The Sable Camp is an ideal retreat for the more reclusive traveller who prefers privacy and exclusivity. The Sable Camp accommodates 14 guests in 5 luxury suites and the Lions Den - a 2 bedroomed, spacious luxury suite with magnificent views.
The fully air-conditioned, beautifully appointed Sable Camp has a truly colonial feel enhanced with modern comforts. A library with satellite television and internet connectivity, swimming pool and large wooden deck surrounding the camp provide the platform from which to admire the unimpeded views that make the Sable Camp experience so rich and interactive. The Sable Camp does not accommodate children under the age of 16, unless the entire camp is reserved exclusively at the respective charge.
Rattray’s on MalaMala represents a classical “into Africa” safari experience in keeping with MalaMala’s history of presenting an authentic view of wildlife in Africa to the discerning traveler.
The Rattray’s camp experience is exclusive, with each of the eight comfortable suites occupying its own elevated site overlooking the Sand River. Filtered plunge pools complete each of the secluded verandahs and an outdoor dining area provides the ideal vantage point from which to enjoy bush cuisine in complete privacy.
Facilities within the main elegant building incorporate a viewing deck, complete with telescope, an air-conditioned library providing a refuge for the literary devotee, an attractive bar showcasing the history of the area and an adjoining wine cellar stocked with a wide range of South Africa’s best wines.
Breakfast and lunch are served in the air-conditioned dining room or on the adjoining deck whilst the traditional reed boma under a magnificent jackalberry tree is the ultimate outdoor evening venue.
The focus of the Rattray’s safaris will continue to reflect the ethos of the reserve over the past forty years – game viewing. Sound conservation management has ensured an environmental sanctuary for an impressive density and diversity of wildlife. Striving for a maximum of 4 guests per safari vehicle this wildlife wonderland that is MalaMala unfolds. Sightings of the Big Five and the interactions of the various species along the food chain from ants to elephants provides visitors with a glimpse of Africa as it has always been – untouched by the modern human hand.
