MALA MALA GAME RESERVE
Mala Mala Game Reserve is the largest tract of privately owned big game territory in South Africa and boasts a multitude of animals including the famed Big Five - lion, elephant, buffalo, both black and white rhino and leopard - cheetah, wild dog, a wealth of antelopes, birds and reptiles all interacting in their natural environment.
Mala Mala Game Reserve is situated in the eastern part of South Africa in the province of Mpumalanga. It shares a common border of 19km / 12 miles with the Kruger National Park and is part of a conservation gene pool that covers 5.5 million acres of land in the heart of the South African Lowveld. Located approximately 500 km from Johannesburg, Mala Mala has its own airstrip for those who prefer to fly in.
Safaris in open Land Rovers are conducted over this vast expanse of bushveld, with after-dark spotlight safaris providing the opportunity to view the nocturnal creatures and carnivores "on the hunt" - a truly exhilarating experience. All vehicles are linked by radio communication and each ranger is equipped with an independent headphone so as not to disturb the relaxation of your safari. No more than 6 guests are permitted per vehicle to enhance your viewing pleasure whilst Rattray’s on Mala Mala limit the number of guests to four. Walking safaris may be arranged depending on the wishes of the guest.
Mala Mala Main Camp is set in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the Sand River. The ochre buildings with their thatched roofs, set among manicured lawns, blend harmoniously with the large shady trees. An expansive wooden deck provides an elevated view of animals watering in the Sand River.
Breakfast and lunch are served in an attractive air-conditioned dining room overlooking the Sand River. Dinner, announced by the beating of African drums, is served under the stars in a reed-enclosed boma, an age-old tradition. Sitting around a log fire, enjoying Mala Mala's venison specialities and haute bush cuisine while sampling an outstanding South African wine, is yet another highlight of the Mala Mala safari experience
The Sable Suite is situated at the southern end of the Mala Mala Camp in a prime elevated position overlooking the Sand River and surrounding bush. The Sable Camp is an ideal retreat for the more reclusive traveller who prefers privacy and exclusivity. The Sable Camp accommodates 14 guests in 5 luxury suites and the Lions Den Suite - a 2 bedroomed, spacious luxury suite with magnificent views.
The air-conditioned, beautifully appointed Sable Camp has a truly colonial feel enhanced with modern comforts. A library with satellite television, Internet connectivity and swimming pool will keep you entertained and the Safari Deck provides the platform from which to admire the unimpeded views that make the Sable Camp experience so rich and interactive. The Sable Camp does not accommodate children under the age of 12, unless the entire camp is reserved exclusively at the respective charge.
Rattray’s on Mala Mala represents a classic “into Africa” safari experience in keeping with Mala Mala’s history of presenting an authentic view of wildlife in Africa to the discerning traveller.
The Rattray’s camp experience is exclusive, with each of the eight comfortable suites occupying its own elevated site overlooking the Sand River. Filtered plunge pools complete each of the secluded verandas and an outdoor dining area provides the ideal vantage point from which to enjoy bush cuisine in complete privacy.
Facilities within the main elegant building incorporate a viewing deck, complete with telescope, an air-conditioned library providing a refuge for the literary devotee, an attractive bar showcasing the history of the area and an adjoining wine cellar stocked with a wide range of South Africa’s best wines.
Breakfast and lunch are served in the air-conditioned dining room or on the adjoining deck whilst the traditional reed boma under a magnificent jackalberry tree is the ultimate outdoor evening venue.
The focus of the Rattray’s on Mala Mala safaris will continue to reflect the ethos of the reserve over the past forty years – game viewing. Sound conservation management has ensured an environmental sanctuary for an impressive density and diversity of wildlife. We strive for a maximum of 4 guests per safari vehicle as this wildlife wonderland that is Mala Mala unfolds before us. Sightings of the Big Five and the interactions of the various species along the food chain from ants to elephants provides visitors with a glimpse of Africa as it has always been – untouched by the modern human hand. This camp has a 16-year-old age limit.
